City of Milwaukee – CMC Shops Property Reclamation
Early in this millennium, the City of Milwaukee took ownership of a 160-acre property which for nearly 120 years housed the main shops for the Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. After the site was abandoned in the ‘70s and fell into neglect, the City contracted with Edgerton Contractors, Inc. to clean up the carnage left behind and build a new industrial center.
The scope of this project was very extensive and included removal and disposal of building demolition debris laced with asbestos, remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater, recycling concrete materials, placement of nearly 2 million cubic yards of imported fill, construction of stormwater detention facilities utilizing natural attenuation methods, and naturalized reconstruction of the banks of the Menomonee River.
